Common Adds to Growing Slate - Books Lead Role in Rob Reiner's 'Being Charlie'

Common is on fire and in demand, apparently! Who woulda thunk it?

Just about half-an-hour ago, I published an item on his joining the cast of the WB’s “Suicide Squad” big screen adaptation, although there’s no word yet on what character he’s signed up to play.

Now the raptor has joined the cast of director Rob Reiner’s next project, “Being Charlie,” in what The Hollywood Reporter says is a lead role.

He’ll co-star alongside Nick Robinson, Morgan Saylor, Devon Bostick, Susan Misner, Ricardo Chavira and Cary Elwes in the Castle Rock Entertainment feature film that will see Robinson play Charlie, an 18-year-old who breaks out of a youth drug treatment clinic, to returns home to Los Angeles, where he’s given an intervention by his parents and forced to go to an adult rehab, and meets an equally-troubled young lady named Eva.

No word on what role Common has booked in this one either.

The project is currently shooting in Salt Lake City.

Reiner is directing from a script penned by his son Nick Reiner and Matt Elisofon.

Common’s other post-“Selma” roles include the crime drama “Run All Night” with Liam Neeson and Ed Harris, which was released last month, and the action thriller “Hunter Killer” with Gerard Butler, William Dafoe and Billy Bob Thornton, which is currently in pre-production.

@Bikol, I was listening to Common Sense back when he sounded like Das Efx. Talented guy? Absolutely, but if you’ve really been following his career you will have noted a series of WTF moments. He’s had a bit of an identity crisis for the last half of his recording career…most notably getting Dr. angelou to appear on on eof his songs years ago and then deciding to use slurs and curse words on said song.I doubt you own his albums or have listened to his classic features on other artists’ songs (which are always better than his own records). In short "Take it Easy"

Can we please stop this phony ‘Common is a sellout!’ bandwagon? You idiot’s have completely taken what he said out of context and are just rooting for him to fail now. Stupidity. The rate of roles he’s been receiving are totally commensurate with what he was getting before the Oscar win; now he’s getting a nice little bump in his profile. He, more than ANYONE deserves it. Ignore his twenty-three career of nuanced, soulful, pro-black messages all you want. How cowardly and expedient is it to ride a foolish black twitter rant that has no proper merit in it’s admonishments of one of the most progressive black icons of the past thirty years?

Guess he’s been extending his hand to whites a lot. *rolls yes* I can’t root for this brother anymore

Mr. Chocolate

I’m not surprised at all he’s getting more offers for roles, ESPECIALLY after that, "Black people should “extend a hand of love” to white people to remedy racism in our country" comment. They LOVE a "Safe Negro." I lost all respect from this guy after that.
