Lionsgate Will Tackle Homer's 'The Odyssey'

Lionsgate is reportedly chiseling away at a grand-scale re-imagining of “The Odyssey” to follow up “The Hunger Games” franchise, which concludes this Fall with “Mockingjay — Part 2” on November 20.

Francis Lawrence, director of “Catching Fire” and the two “Mockingjay” films, has been tapped to direct, with “Mockingjay” co-screenwriter Peter Craig penning the film. Nina Jacobson, who has shepherded the entire “Hunger Games” franchise to box office gold, will produce “The Odyssey” through her Color Force production banner.

“The Odyssey” is expected to begin production in early 2016, after the filmmakers wrap their “Mockingjay” chores. Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig, who pitched the project to Lawrence, is overseeing with executive production veep Jim Miller and development director James Myers.

“The Odyssey” myth has been done time and again onscreen, from Kirk Douglas’ 1954 “Ulysses” to more abstract approaches like the Coens’ “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” and Tim Burton’s “Big Fish.”
