Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Morgan Matthews’ inspirational coming-of-age drama “A Brilliant Young Mind,” starring Asa Butterfield, Sally Hawkins and Rafe Spall. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September under the title “X+Y” and is based on Matthews’ 2007 documentary “Beautiful Young Minds.”
Butterfield stars as Nathan, an autistic teenage math prodigy being mentored by his unconventional and anarchic teacher, Mr. Humphreys (Spall). When it becomes clear that his talents are enough to earn him a place on the British team competing at the highly revered International Mathematics Olympiad, Nathan heads to Taiwan for an unforgettable, life-affirming journey.
“We are excited to bring this incredibly moving and inspiring film to audiences around the country,” said Peter Goldwyn of Samuel Goldwyn Films. “The cast has tremendous chemistry and they each deliver remarkable performances. They will have you rooting for them from the beginning to the end of the film.”
Samuel Goldwyn Films will release the film sometime this summer.
