The 15 Best LGBT Characters On Television: Patrick Murray On 'Looking'

Yes, we know: “Looking” has been cancelled. But this list is specific to the television season that is just coming to an end now, and the world of “Looking” is not dead yet. HBO has ordered a two hour film to wrap things up, which is essentially a four episode third season. And either way, not including as fascinatingly imperfect an antihero as “Looking” lead Patrick Murray on this list would be — as least as far as we’re concerned — a big shame.

While by no means a role model, Patrick (played by the wonderful Jonathan Groff) did develop into a layered and interesting and contemporary character like few others on television, and we look forward to the “Looking” writers (and Groff) fleshing that out even further in the movie. But whatever happens with his probably-won’t-end-well Richie/Kevin love triangle (our heart says Richie, but our…), the personal growth Patrick has and will continue to build is what we’re most curious about.  Driven by his desire to project himself as a good person and fight against the flaws he feels he’s largely been handed by his WASPy mother, Patrick held a mirror up to so many gay men in their 20s and 30s struggling to find a sense of self in this weird new world of online hookups and same-sex marriage.  You can call him boring, you can call him privileged… just don’t try and suggest Patrick Murray is as real a character as they come.
