The 20 Highest Grossing Indies of 2015 (A Running List)

The 20 Highest Grossing Indies of 2015 (A Running List)

The first quarter of 2015 has come and gone, and it hasn’t exactly left too many big indie hits in its wake. Oscar-fueled holdovers from 2014 namely dominated the art houses, leaving little room for newbies to break through. In fact, the highest grossing specialty title released in 2015 was an Oscar winner itself. Thanks to a qualifying run last year, Julianne Moore’s Oscar winning film “Still Alice” is technically the highest grossing specialty title to receive a commercial release in 2015.

That should change soon, though. Acclaimed horror film “It Follows” and Noah Baumbach’s “While We’re Young” are quickly climbing the below chart of 2015’s highest growing specialty titles, with a busy schedule of anticipated indies set for the rest of Spring.

Note that the below list only includes North American grosses for specialty films — indie,
foreign and/or documentary — that opened in limited release
(initially under 500 screens) in 2015 and were released by an
independent distributor or a studio specialty division. It also includes
films that
screened only as an Academy-qualifier in 2014 (“Still Alice,” “Wild Tales,” “Cake,” etc). Grosses include all reported grosses up to April 6, 2015. This chart is updated every Tuesday evening.
