Alchemy Gets Busy at Cannes, Grabs Nanni Moretti’s 'Mia Madre,' Gaspar Noé's 3D 'Love'

Indie distributor Alchemy has just scooped up Cannes perennial Nanni Moretti’s “Mia Madre” out of the competition. This semi-autobiographical seriocomedy centers on a director (Margherita Buy) who’s shooting an Italian film with an unruly and famous American actor (John Turturro). Meanwhile, she’s trying to keep her own life together, despite her mother’s (Giulia Lazzarini) illness and daughter’s (Beatrice Mancini) budding adolescence.

Moretti, who also stars in the film and won the 2001 Palme d’Or for “The Son’s Room,” co-penned the script with Francesco Piccolo and Valia Santella. In 2012, he served as the Cannes jury president when Michael Haneke’s “Amour” took the Palme.

Moretti produced “Mia Madre” through his Sacher Film banner along with Domenico Procacci of Fandango and Rai Cinema. While no release date has been set, the film has so far met acclaim and interest among most — but not all — critics. The Hollywood Reporter writes that “Good, strong, understated filmmaking is enlivened by Moretti’s characteristic wry blend of drama and humor.” But Indiewire counters: “The mediocre film Margherita is working on ends up reminiscing the equally disappointing film Moretti has made.”

Earlier, Alchemy also picked up Gaspar Noé’s hotly buzzed, three-hour, 3D sex-fueled melodrama “Love,” which is sure to blow up the Croisette upon its Midnight premiere on May 20. No release date for this one either, but here’s the synopsis as we await first reviews: “Murphy wakes up next to his young wife and 2-year-old child. He listens to his voicemail: Electra’s mother, sick with worry, wants to know whether he has heard from her daughter. Electra’s been missing for a long time. She’s afraid something really bad has happened to her. Over the course of a long rainy day, Murphy finds himself alone in his apartment, reminiscing about the greatest love affair of his life, his two years with Electra. A burning passion full of promises, games, excesses and mistakes…”
