Azealia Banks Will Make Her Feature Film Acting Debut Starring in RZA's 'Coco'

Azealia Banks will make her big screen acting debut in a Lionsgate/Codeblack Brooklyn-set drama that will be directed by RZA, titled “Coco.”

Banks will play the title character, who is described as “an aspiring twenty-something rapper who wants a career in hip hop, but is torn by her parents’ dreams that she finish college. She gives in. While in the classroom, she experiences the true calling of the power of the spoken word, which helps her goals as a hip hop artist.”

This is according to Deadline.

Joining Banks in front of the camera will be Common, Jill Scott, Lucien Laviscount, Lorraine Toussaint, and Hana Mae Lee.

RZA will direct from a script penned by Nicole Jefferson Asher, who was previously tapped to adapt Omar Tyree’s “Flyy Girl” also for Lionsgate/Codeblack.

Paul Hall will produce.

In terms of acting experience, the 23-year-old rapper, singer, and songwriter studied at the LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts before dropping out to focus on her musical career. Her IMDB page says that she appeared in a peripheral part in the 2005 documentary/musical “The American Ruling Class,” playing a singer and dancer.

Her debut studio album, “Broke with Expensive Taste, was released in 2014.
