Cannes: Alicia Vikander and Tom Hanks to Star in Dave Eggers Thriller 'The Circle'

Image Nation Abu Dhabi announced a deal to fully finance James Ponsoldt’s upcoming feature adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel The Circle. The film will be presented by Image Nation in association with Parkes MacDonald Productions. IM Global are handling international sales on the film and will be repping it at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. US rights are being jointly repped by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA.

Hot “Ex Machina” star Alicia Vikander has joined Tom Hanks in James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel, slated to begin filming August 2015 in California. Eggers’ novel focuses on a young woman hired for a big job in an Internet monopoly called The Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchases with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. Personal data is collected, sifted and monetized and used for surveillance, and privacy becomes obsolete.

Producer Hanks also starred in the Eggers’ adaptation “A Hologram For the King,” directed by Tom Tykwer. That was supposed to be a buzzy Marche project last year but alas will be returning to the Croisette. It’s now in post-production.

“The Circle” is repped by IM Global and financed by Image Nation Abu Dhabi. The film is presented by Image Nation and Parkes Macdonald.
