Cannes Awards: Directors Fortnight, Un Certain Regard, Critics Week

The Cannes Film Festival has handed out some awards in advance of its closing night bash on Sunday, when the jury headed by the Coen brothers will hand out the Palme d’Or and other prizes.

The Un Certain Regard jury was headed by Italian actress Isabella Rossellini, who walked around Cannes all week looking at the poster of her mother Ingrid Bergman. “Mamma seems to hovered over all of us, filmmakers and film lovers,” said Rossellini, “as a guardian angel.

The jury, also including directors Haifaa al-Mansour (Saudi Arabia), Panos H. Koutras (Greece), Nadine Labaki (Lebanon) and actor Tahar Rahim (France), picked winners from among 19 films from 21 countries, four of which were eligible for the first film award.

Cannes sidebar Directors Fortnight, in its 47th incarnation, also gave out awards. 
Colombian director Ciro Guerro’s black-and-white Amazon period adventure “The Embrace of the Serpent” won the Art Cinema Award. Guerra had another film, “The Wind Journeys,” in Un Certain Regard in 2009.
The Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers (SACD) Prize for a French-language film went to Arnaud Desplechin’s heartfelt coming-of-age romance “My Golden Days,” starring newcomers Quentin Dolmaire and Lou Roy-Lecollinet, a prequel to his 1996 Cannes film “My Sex Life, or … How I Got Into an Argument.” Many thought the film should have been shown in Competition over such weaker French entries as Valerie Donzelli’s “Marguerite et Julien” and Guillaume Nicloux’s “Valley of Love.”  
The Europa Cinemas Label for best European film went to rookie Turkish director Deniz Gamze Erguven’s “Mustang,” about five young sisters who are locked up at home by their grandmother after they are caught cavorting with young men by the seaside. Cohen Media Group bought North American rights at the festival.

And the 54th Critics’ Week gave out awards as well. 

Its Nespresso Grand Prix went to Santiago Mitre’s sophomore film “Paulina,” about a woman lawyer in a tough neighborhood who will not give up her work even when attacked. 

A second Latin American film, Colombian director Cesar Acevedo’s sugarcane plantation drama “Land and Shade,” nabbed the France 4 Visionary Award as well as the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers SACD Prize. 
Clement Cogitore’s Afghanistan war drama “The Wakhan Front,” starring Jeremie Renier, took home the Gan Foundation Support for Distribution. 
The Canal Plus Award for best short went to “Ramona,” and Italian Fulvio Risuelo’s “Chickenpox” scored the Sony CineAlta Discovery Prize.
