“In the Shadow of Women,” the new film from Philippe Garrel (“Regular Lovers,” “Jealousy”) has been acquired by Distrib Films U.S. for U.S. distribution. The acquisition comes ahead of the film’s world premiere as the opening night film of the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
Directed by Garrell and with a screenplay by Academy Award honoree Jean-Claude Carriere (“Belle De Jour,” “Certified Copy”), the film follows Pierre and Manon, a filmmaker couple whose relationship suffers when Pierre’s mistress Elisabeth discovers that Manon is also having an affair.
“This is the first film we have acquired a film at script stage but the combination of Garrel and Jean-Claude Carriere was irresistible,” said Distrib Films President François Scippa-Kohn. “We hope the attention at Canne will bring it and further festival play in the US will help launch this into the most successful Garrel release yet.
“In the Shadow of Women” marks the second Director’s Fortnight premiere for Garrel, whose film “The Virgin Bed” was part of the very first Director’s Fortnight in 1969. It will have its world premiere on May 14, 2015.
