'Justified' and 'Olive Kitteridge' Lead 2015 Critics' Choice TV Awards, With 'The Americans,' 'Transparent' Right Behind

As Emmys season kicks into gear, the Critics Choice Television Awards are here to give a voice to some of the dark horse candidates. “Justified,” a perennial critical darling and Emmys snub, earned the most nominations of any ongoing series for its final season. “Olive Kitteridge,” the HBO miniseries starring Frances McDormand, tied it for most nominations with five overall, but FX’s other critically-hailed drama “The Americans” and Amazon’s “Transparent” were right behind with four nods each. “The Good Wife,” HBO’s upcoming Dee Rees film “Bessie,” and PBS’ miniseries “Wolf Hall” also landed four nominations apiece.

Though the Critics Choice Awards don’t often match up with the eventual Emmy nominees, they do serve as a magnifying glass for specific stars and shows — especially new series. Anyone looking to boost their awareness couldn’t ask for a better platform than a live television broadcast, only days before Emmy nomination voting begins.

A few highlights: Indiewire favorite “The Leftovers” snagged two nods — one for Carrie Coon as Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and the other for Christopher Eccleston in Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. “You’re The Worst” also nabbed a nod for Best Comedy Series, and Eva Green scored a much-deserved slot in the Best Actress (Drama) category for “Penny Dreadful.”

Mark and Jay Duplass’ HBO series “Togetherness” landed nominations for star Melanie Lynskey (Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series) and Peter Gallagher (Guest Actor in a Comedy Series). “Bloodline” landed its only nod for Ben Mendelsohn, who should be making a similar charge at the Emmys. Meanwhile, “The Americans,” “Homeland,” “Orange is the New Black” and “Game of Thrones” all earned spots in the Best Drama Series category. We’ll see if Jenji Kohan’s Netflix series has as much success transitioning from comedy to drama at the Emmys soon enough.

The Fifth Annual Critics Choice Television Awards will air May 31 on A&E at 8pm. The full list of nominees is below.

Ann

Justified should win, but probably won’t. It’s long overdue for recognition and awards.

Giang

Big snubs: Looking, Jonathan Groff and Lauren Weedman.

PMD

Nice to see Justified getting much deserved recognition.

Amy

How is it Melanie Lynskey and Carrie Brownstein are in the Best Supporting Actress categories, when they are the leads on their shows? I will never understand these awards…
