Watch: Attention DIY Filmmakers, Here's How to Recreate the Aurora Borealis

Joey Shanks has recreated supernatural weather using cloud tanks and has rebuilt the “Interstellar” black hole using in-camera elements, and now the special effects maestro is back with a new instructional video courtesy of PBS Digital Studios and Shanks FX.

In the clip above, Shanks recreates the Aurora Borealis using nothing but colored sheets of fabric and a handful of small fans. The new video is one of four episodes highlighting the effects work Shanks utilized for his new film, “Spectrum.” Find out more about the project at its Kickstarter page here, and check out all of Shanks’ FX tutorials on his Youtube page.
