Isn’t it about time we stopped asking women to decide between children and career? You’d think that the issues brought up in this trailer for Kris Swanberg’s “Unexpected” would be passé in 2015, but sadly — as John Oliver pointed out last night — they’re still front and center.

According to the official synopsis, “Unexpected” follows the “unlikely friendship that develops between two expectant mothers: Samantha Abbott (Cobie Smulders), a dedicated and passionate teacher at an inner-city Chicago high school, and one of her most promising students, Jasmine (Gail Bean). As the women navigate their unexpected pregnancies and their ambitions for the future, Samantha and Jasmine forge a relationship that challenges their perspectives and leaves a lasting impact on one another.”

“Unexpected” premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and opens in theaters and on demand July 24.
