Every hero needs a villain, and Puss in Boots may have found the best one yet. In the second half of the stealthy cat’s first season on Netflix, Puss will face off against El Moco, voiced by the instantly threatening Danny Trejo. In the clip above, Trejo’s character tries to take over as the new town mayor and it’s up to our hero Puss — and a barrel being operated by the old mayor — to stop him.
Trejo took a few minutes to speak to Indiewire about the new role, saying, “He’s a bad guy. He’s a really mean, mean character without too many redeeming qualities about him. Puss in Boots needed a really good bad guy, and I’m the best. So they developed this character and he’s big, mean and nasty.”
“I loved him,” Trejo said about his on-screen rival, Puss in Boots. “He is muy loco. It was a lot of fun, the whole thing, just a lot of fun.”
Trejo’s character only appears in one episode of “The Adventures of Puss in Boots,” “but he’ll be coming back,” Trejo said with a laugh.
Trejo also remarked about how fans of his have transitioned over the years, and why he thinks it’s so important to take roles across genres.
“Once you get a kid as a fan, it’s a fan for life. I grew up with a lot of [fans of] ‘Spy Kids.’ They all watched my movies 15 years ago, and now they’re all grown up watching my R-rated movies. […] From the kids I get recognized for ‘Spy Kids’ and ‘Bubble Boy,’ and for the adults, they love ‘Con Air’ and ‘Machete.’ [‘Con Air’] was the biggest testosterone fest in Hollywood.”
New episodes of “The Adventures of Puss in Boots” debut this Friday, May 8, only on Netflix. Take a look at an exclusive image of Trejo’s character below.
