Teen drama movies can quickly turn cloy at times, but from the looks of this new trailer, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” could actually be doing something different with the genre.

The trailer shows Greg, played by the adorable Thomas Mann (“It’s Kind of a Funny Story”), a high school social drifter who has never really committed himself to a friend. The only person who’s come close to holding that title is Earl, played by newcomer RJ Cyler, who Greg lovingly refers to as his co-worker. His title is not entirely untrue, as both of them have co-directed spoof movies since they were little. When one of Greg’s myriad acquaintances is diagnosed with cancer, however, he learns to commit himself to someone and what it means to be a friend.

The two clips below provide a glimpse into Greg’s detachedness, and also into the funky cinematography that’ll definitely add a new dimension to the indie film.
