Alchemy has acquired U.S. distribution rights for “The Runner,” the Nicholas Cage-led drama about a politician’s life after the BP oil spill. The film also stars Sarah Paulson, Connie Nelson and Peter Fonda and marks the feature film debut of writer-director Austin Stark.

Alchemy aggressively pursued the film with the hope of a late summer 2015 release date. The strength of the company’s offer coupled with their enthusiasm for the film led the filmmakers to decide to forego a festival premiere.

The official synopsis reads: “‘The Runner’ follows an idealistic but flawed politician (Cage), who, in
the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, is forced to confront his dysfunctional
life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal.”

“With ‘The Runner,’ Austin Stark
has crafted a captivating drama through a personal lens while tackling an event
that resonated globally and remains very relevant in today’s environment,” said Alchemy’s Brooke Ford. “With a superb cast led by
Nicolas Cage, this film’s gripping storyline will keep audiences on the edge of
their seats.”
