Gbenga Akinnagbe Joins Cast of 'Independence Day 2'

Gbenga Akinnagbe just works! He’s almost everywhere, it seems, both on the big and small screens, Hollywood and indie, in front of and behind the camera, the man just works!

Following his stint on Fox’s “The Following” this season (which is now over), the renaissance man has joined the cast of Roland Emmerich’s “Independence Day” sequel, playing an Agent Travis, who’s described as a Secret Service agent assigned to former President Whitmore (played by Bill Pullman).

He joins the previously cast Jessie T. Usher, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Sela Ward and Deobia Oparei.

The next film in the franchise, which will be released during the summer of 2016 (June 24), 20 years after the first film’s theatrical debut, will center on a global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. “Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare them for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

No specifics on how the storylines of each character (especially the new additions) will feed the main narrative; but, at least we now know what that narrative is.

Akinnagbe, who also recurs on CBS’ “The Good Wife,” also recently joined that cast of FX’s upcoming “American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson.” He stars in Ben Bowman’s “Knucklehead,” an indie drama co-starring Alfre Woodard, which is currently touring the film festival circuit.
