On the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver managed to make something as terrifying as an explanation of the United States CIA Torture Report both hilarious and informative — kind of the status quo for his HBO series.

With his usual wit and straightforward logic — plus several offscreen cameos of Helen Mirren’s soothing voice — John Oliver explained the horrifying torture the CIA implemented on suspected terrorists. With the help of torture-filled shows like “24,” John Oliver explains a blatant absurdity in American culture — that even at the highest levels of our justice system, we base our belief in the efficacy of torture on things like television dramas.

In this segment, John Oliver also takes the perfect opportunity to make fun of Mel Gibson’s many torture scenes, Bill Cosby, and the recent movie “Aloha,” along with rightful jabs at CIA leaders, politicians, and American society in general.

HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” airs Sundays at 11pm.
