“Do you think you have trouble controlling your impulses?”
While asked bluntly in the new Season 3 trailer, the implications of the above question have been hovering over “Rectify” since it premiered in 2013. Audiences still don’t know exactly how guilty Daniel Holden is, as the DNA evidence that freed him from a death sentence didn’t exonerate him entirely from the crime. Worse yet, he doesn’t remember what happened, and the district attorney isn’t about to let him off the hook. Season 2’s finale complicated things even further, as now even Daniel’s family aren’t so sure he’s as innocent as they once thought.
Presumed guilt, reasonable doubt, heresy, gut instincts and good ol’ fashioned prejudice cycled through the first two seasons of “Rectify,” and they look to be coming to a head in the Season 3 trailer. Created by Ray McKinnon, “Rectify” has received top notch reviews for its first two seasons thanks to a superb cast, topical central issues, and a tone totally unique to this world. “Rectify” recently won a Peabody Award for its second season, but has (shamefully) yet drawn the attention of the Emmys.
“Rectify” Season 3 premieres July 9 on SundanceTV. Catch up with the first two seasons on Netflix.
