'Break a Hip' Is a New Web Series You Definitely Should Be Watching

You probably know Christina Pickles either as Monica and Ross’s Mom on “Friends” or as Nurse Helen on “St. Elsewhere,” depending on your era. Either way, get ready to discover her in a whole new way with the new webseries “Break a Hip,” which puts Pickles front and center as Biz, an elderly English actress living alone in a one-room studio in the heart of Hollywood who hires failing actor Wincy (newcomer Britt Hennemuth) to help manage her daily needs. Hilarity — and a sweet and unexpected friendship — ensues. As does a bunch of awesome guest stars, including Octavia Spencer, Priscilla Barnes, Jim Rash, Peri Gilpin and the love of our lives Allison Janney (as a vindictive, banjo playing landlady, no less).

The story is loosely based on series creator Cameron Watson’s personal experience as a young actor in Hollywood.

“I was hired by an older English actress who lived by herself,” said Watson. “Her husband was dead, all of her friends were dead, she had no one. She was a lovely, complicated woman. And she was alone and frightened. And that often came out as mean. I loved her deeply and she taught me a lot. We developed a very strong dependency on each other and the absurdity of our adventures together are what inspired the script.”
