Casting News Round-up: Jimmy Akingbola, Mekia Cox, Stacey Dash, Sasheer Zamata, Others...

Some casting news not previously reported that you should be aware of…

First, the CW has cast British actor Jimmy Akingbola as Blitzkrieg in season four of “Arrow” – aka Oliver Queen’s adversary Baron Reiter, in a recurring role. In the DC Comics universe, Blitzkrieg is the leader of the crime organization Shadowspire.

The news follows the casting of another black actor in Echo Kellum as Mister Terrific, who will also appear in “Arrow’s” fourth season, which premieres Oct. 7 on The CW.

Second, Mekia Cox has been cast opposite Michael Ealy and Juliette Lewis in Season 2 of ABC’s anthology crime drama series “Secrets & Lies,” which will feature an all-new crime story that follows Eric Warner (Ealy), a newly married heir apparent who is under suspicion when his wife is murdered. Cox has been cast as Amanda Warner, Eric’s sister, and wife of a prominent Charlotte surgeon, who works as a criminal attorney for the Public Defender’s office. She idolizes her older brother Eric and is fiercely protective of him, immediately coming to his aid when he is targeted by Detective Cornell (Lewis) as the prime suspect in the murder of his wife.

Third, Aurora Perrineau (daughter of Harold Perrineau) has joined the cast of ABC’s “Blood & Oil” which examines the biggest oil discovery in American history, which triggers a geopolitical shift and economic boom on a scale not seen since the 1849 California Gold Rush. Perrineau will play Lacey Briggs, the beautiful daughter of oil tycoon Hap Briggs (Don Johnson), a child he had out of wedlock. Perrineau replaces Caitlin Carver, who played the role in the pilot.

Fourth, La La Anthony has joined the cast of Spike Lee’s Amazon Studios film “Chiraq,” which I thought was already done with principal photographer, to play a character named Hecuba, who’s described as a very strong, fiesty, outspoken woman who is part of an all-woman gang.

And finally, Stacey Dash, Sasheer Zamata, Cameron Esposito and Syechelle Gabriel have all joined the cast of JD Dillard’s “Sleight” from Diablo Entertainment, which is described as an “urban magic thriller about a young Los Angeles street magician who is left to take care of his little sister after their mother’s death. He turns to drug dealing to keep a roof over their heads. After he has a run-in with his supplier and his sister is kidnapped, the magician has to rely on his talents. The film stars Dulé Hill, Jacob Latimore and Tyga. Production begins this month.

That’s all for now…
