The summer movie season is swarming with sequels, but it’s hard to imagine any of them delivering as much fun as “Magic Mike XXL.” Its crowdpleasing potential was obvious from the trailer, but as we all know, trailers never guarantee quality.
But marketers certainly try to convince us otherwise. This week saw the arrival of three major trailers, and they all invite plenty of scrutiny. While Oliver Stone’s biopic “Snowden” includes no actual footage from the film, it hints at the kind of project one might expect from the politically-motivated filmmaker (for better or worse). By that same token, Ryan Coogler’s “Rocky” spin-off “Creed” showcased a potentially exciting boxing drama heading to theaters on Thanksgiving weekend. But perhaps the most intriguing window into an upcoming release arrived with an extensive look at Danny Boyle’s “Steve Jobs,” which features Michael Fassbender in the title role.
How much can we glean from these trailers? In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson dissect the aforementioned previews and assess the rest of the fall movie season based on what we know so far. The co-hosts also discuss “Magic Mike XXL” and look ahead to next week’s big events at Comic Con.
