Little White Lies Completes Its List of 100 Great Movies By Female Directors

Today, film publication Little White Lies completes its list of 100 great movies by female directors. Our own Sam Adams discussed the first 50 films last week, which included Chantal Akerman’s “Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles,” Elaine May’s “Ishtar,” and Amy Heckerling’s “Clueless.” The list functions as a neat response to other polls going around the Internet, like the BBC poll of the 100 greatest American movies of all time, but now that the list is complete, we can examine it as a whole.

The back-half of the list heads into the 21st Century. Some of these films include Claire Denis’ “Beau Travail,” Mary Harron’s “American Psycho,” Nicole Holofcener’s “Lovely & Amazing,” Lynne Ramsay’s “Morvern Caller,” Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation,” Lone Scherfig’s “An Education,” Kelly Reichardt’s “Wendy & Lucy,” Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone,” Julia Loktev’s “The Loneliest Planet,” Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell,” Jennifer Kent’s “The Babadook,” and Ava DuVernay’s “Selma.” All of these films are worthy of our attention and discussion.

But lists like this just remind all of us of the dearth of female perspectives in the film industry. Most all of these films on the list are great, and it’s fantastic that Little White Lies highlighted these films, but in a perfect world, I’d like to see a list of the 100 worst films by female directors, or a list of 100 flops by female directors. Women in the film industry aren’t given the same opportunities as men to fail, or even to be mediocre. Instead, you either be better than a man or not be a director at all. Nevertheless, watch and discuss these films in the hope that all kinds of women can direct all kinds of films.
