Patricia Riggen’s “The 33,” the drama based on the 2010 Chilean mine collapse that left nearly three dozen men underground for more than two months with just three days’ worth of food, has “inspirational crowd-pleaser” written all over it.
Antonio Banderas stars and Juliette Binoche supports in the English-language film, which finds the miners turning to each other for comfort and camaraderie and their families determined to get their loved ones back home.
Familiar as many aspects of the film may be — there’s an older miner just two weeks from retirement, because of course there is — “The 33” might have some luck during awards season with its November 13 release
Needless to say, it’s also encouraging that Warner Bros. hired a woman director for this male-dominated movie. Riggen previously directed “Girl in Progress” and “Under the Same Moon.”
