TV Casting News: Marque Richardson Takes on Bob Moses & Elliot Knight Tackles Merlin

Some TV news you can use, which I previously didn’t report…

First, Marque Richardson has joined the cast of HBO’s adaptation of Robert Schenkkan’s Broadway play, “All the Way,” which centers on then President Lyndon B. Johnson’s efforts to maneuver members of the 88th United States Congress to enact, and Martin Luther King, Jr. to support, the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The play apparently takes its name from Johnson’s 1964 campaign slogan, “All the Way with LBJ.” It premiered on Broadway in March 2014, in a production directed by Bill Rauch, which won the 2014 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. Bryan Cranston won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as LBJ, and he will also star in the HBO adaptation, which will be directed by Jay Roach, and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Richardson has been cast to play civil rights activist Bob Moses (Robert Parris Moses), who became one of the most influential black leaders of the southern civil rights struggle. He joins Anthony Mackie, who will play Martin Luther King, Jr. Richardson most recently appeared on the big screen in “Dear White People.” On the small screen, he’s featured in episodes of serials like “The Newsroom” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” to name a couple.

Second, ABC’s “Once Upon a Time” has cast British actor Elliot Knight to play Merlin in the upcoming Season 5 of the series. USA audiences may recognize him from the BBC/Sky 1 HD production of “Sinbad” – a 2012 TV series that featured performances from the likes of Sophie Okonedo, George Harris, Ashley Walters and Estella Daniels. Knight played the title character. The event miniseries would eventually air in the USA a year after its UK run. Knight has also appeared in episodes of ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder.” He joins the previously cast Sinqua Walls in “Once Upon a Time,” who is set to reprise his role as the knight Lancelot. Black actors playing Merlin and Lancelot in a mainstream TV series? I guess I need to check this one out…

That’s all for now…
