“The Crossing,” John Woo’s 3D epic love story, follows three couples during the sinking of the Taiping in 1949, which makes it somewhat of a foreign cousin to James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster “Titanic.” The film stars Zhang Ziyi, Song Hye-kyo, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Huang Xiaoming, Tong Dawei and Masami Nagasawa, and was written by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” scribe Hui-Ling Wang.
“I have always been a big fan of David Lean’s ‘Dr. Zhivago,’ and I wanted to make an epic love story myself. It’s always been my dream as a director to shoot something beautiful, and on a sweeping scale that captures the turbulence of a changing era,” said Woo in an interview with Deadline. “Most western audiences are unfamiliar with Chinese history from that period of time, so I wanted show them the struggles and tribulations, and ultimately triumphs, that people form that era experienced.”
The first part of “The Crossing” has been released in China and the second part is set to debut next month. No U.S. release dates have been set. Check out the trailer for “The Crossing 2” above.
