On this week’s “Hit Record on TV with Joseph Gordon-Levitt,” a collaborative television show comprised of contributions from viewers around the world, Gordon-Levitt approached his most controversial topic yet: guns.

The episode opens with a collection of short opinion snippets from “Hit Record” community members from Venezuela to Pennsylvania to England. The last of these calls U.S. gun laws “mental.” We are then treated to a tutorial on gun safety, following a brief segment on gun laws in Mexico, where there is a grand total of one licensed gun shop. (The majority of gun holders in Mexico procure their weapons illegally from the U.S., where we have, shockingly, more gun dealerships than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined.) Also in the episode is a somber segment on the Port Arthur Massacre in Australia, as well as a brief summary of gun history, including the true origins of the expression “riding shotgun.”
Gordon-Levitt, collaborating with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg — as well as surprise guest Zac Efron — tackles the issue through a satirical lens with the sketch “Dick Guns,” by combining live-action and animation in the above three-minute segment that critiques the gendering evident within American gun laws. “We’ve combined the fun of the male penis with the destructive power of a gun. Now you don’t have to be afraid of our horrifyingly diverse society — or the size of your dick!”
