The film, which is set for release this fall, is a dramatic wartime thriller based on true events. It tells the story of James Donovan (Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot. Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone”), Alan Alda (“The Aviator”) and Mark Rylance (“Wolf Hall”) head up the impressive supporting cast.
Expectations on this one are about as high as you’d expect. Along with an awards-friendly October release date, “Bridge of Spies” has the Coen Brothers tapped as co-screenwriters and Thomas Newman as composer. This is also Spielberg’s first directorial job since “Lincoln,” a massive critical and commercial success.
Following up the debut trailer that dropped last month, a second look at the drama has finally surfaced with intriguing new footage. Spielberg looks to be mining palpable tension on the streets of East Berlin in the clip above, and we also get a glimpse of Austin Stowell, who’s playing U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.
“Bridge of Spies” hits theaters on October 16.
