2015 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie

On our honor, we did discuss the possibility of Nicole Kidman’s heavily-chastised “Grace of Monaco” making the cut in another weak year for TV movies, but actually seeing it happen was still shocking. After a rough run at Cannes, the film was made a mockery by critics (and its own screenwriter) when the Grace Kelly biopic officially became a Lifetime movie (even though the network is going through an exciting rebranding period). Yet that didn’t stop it from breaking into the Emmys race. Now the question becomes: can it pull off another upset, this time to an even larger degree?

The odds aren’t looking great. With two strong entries from awards darling HBO, Lifetime would have to make a push big enough to win back some of the respect that seems permanently lost for this film. Kidman being kept out of the actress race won’t help, either, as both Queen Latifah and David Oyelowo will likely be campaigning much harder for “Bessie” and “Nightingale,” respectively.

Of course, HBO has a third nominee in the bunch, as “Hello, Ladies: The Movie” was another somewhat surprising qualifier in the field. Don’t expect the good folks at Home Box Office to push Stephen Merchant’s failed attempt at a TV series too hard when they’ve got more prestigious fare in the running, though. Other underdogs include “Agatha Christie’s Poirot,” which will rely on the nostalgia factor to earn a win for the final screen appearance of the popular detective, and “Killing Jesus,” a National Geographic movie sure to court the religious vote. Still, no matter what strategies these scrappy entrants try out, it will likely come down to which film HBO feels best about.

Below are predictions for Outstanding TV Movie from both Indiewire Awards Editor Peter Knegt and TV Critic Ben Travers. Check back as they might very well change ’em up between now and September, and stay up-to-date on all the races with our predictions in all the categories here.
