One of the more glaring absences in the recent onslaught of festival lineups from TIFF, NYFF and Venice has been the omission of Angelina Jolie’s “By the Sea.” The actress’ third directorial effort finds the megastar acting opposite real-life husband Brad Pitt in an art film about a husband and wife working out their marriage while on vacation at a seaside resort in 1970s France. While the gorgeous debut trailer suggested an assured adult drama, many were left wondering exactly what state the film was in, as it failed to find a place at any of the major fall festivals.
Fortunately, that has all changed now thanks to the AFI Fest, which has announced that “By the Sea” will have its world premiere as the Opening Night Gala of the 29th edition of the event. The film also features an international cast that includes Mélanie Laurent, Melvil Poupaud, Niels Arestrup and Richard Bohringer.
“Time and again, Angelina Jolie Pitt has proven herself an artist of the highest caliber,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “It is an honor for AFI to celebrate her latest story with its World Premiere – and in doing so – to shine a proper light upon her boundless creative energies as actor, director, writer and producer.”
AFI Fest will take place November 5–12 in Hollywood. The full festival lineup and schedule will be unveiled in October.
