BAFTA Picks Britannia Award Winners

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) has chosen the first honorees for the 2015 British Academy Britannia Awards presented by American Airlines. The Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film goes to Meryl Streep, while Bond auteur Sam Mendes will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing. New TV funnyman James Corden will receive the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.
Done + Dusted will produce this year’s ceremony which will be held at the Beverly Hilton on October 30, at the start of the awards season; the BAFTA Britannia Awards always draws a fair share of Oscar contenders happy to press the flesh. The awards recognize outstanding British and American talent with a strong career connection to the British industry.
More honorees are still to come. Other key awards events include the BAFTA Tea Party in Los Angeles on January 9, 2016 the weekended of the Golden Globes as well as the EE British Academy Film Awards in London on Sunday, February 14, 2016.
Two-time BAFTA-winning Streep has portrayed an array of characters in a career that has cut its own path from the theatre through film and television for almost 40 years. Prior recipients of the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film include Robert Downey Jr., George Clooney, Warren Beatty, Jeff Bridges, Tom Cruise, Daniel Day Lewis, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, George Lucas, Sean Penn, Steven Spielberg and Denzel Washington.
Director Mendes has effortlessly moved between theatre and movies, earning an Academy Award for his first film, “American Beauty,” and most recently taking on the Bond franchise with “Skyfall” and the upcoming “Spectre.” Past recipients of the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing include Mike Newell, Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan, David Yates, Quentin Tarantino, and Kathryn Bigelow.
Whether an emerging talent or an established name, the British Artist of the Year honors a person who represents the best of British talent. Corden is now a star on both sides of the Atlantic, from musical “Into the Woods” to his debut as host of CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” Prior recipients include Emma Watson, Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, Tilda Swinton, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Blunt, Michael Sheen, and Rachel Weisz.
