James Franco Will Play Porn Industry Twins in HBO Pilot

When James Franco is not penning stories, producing his proteges’ movies, installing art, writing books on tragic pop stars or heading film classes, he does act.

But one role is not enough for the man-of-all-trades, now tapped to start in a period pilot from “The Wire” creator David Simon called “The Deuce.” Franco will play twin brothers caught up in the Times Square underbelly of the porn industry in the 1970s and 1980s, as HIV looms, cocaine is ubiquitous and the midtown Manhattan real estate market goes up and down. Reportedly “The Deuce” takes cues from real-life moguls who fronted mob seizure of the porn industry. Franco co-produces, and “Breaking Bad”‘s Michelle MacLaren will direct.

“Porn, prostitution, pimps, the Mob, after-hours nightlife, institutional corruption, and New York in its Wild West heyday,” said George Pelecanos, a writer and producer on “The Wire.” “It’s a world rich in character, and a fascinating story we’re eager to tell.”

Meanwhile, David Simon also has another HBO pilot on the docket, a yet-to-be-titled Capitol Hill corruption story co-created by investigative journo Carl Bernstein, who reported heavily on Watergate.

Simon, who followed up “The Wire” with “Treme” on HBO, created the upcoming HBO miniseries “Show Me a Hero” starring Oscar Isaac and directed by Paul Haggis, set for August 16. The six-part drama explores home, race, community and politics in 1960s Yonkers.
