John Legend has joined Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the cast of “La La Land,” the new musical comedy from “Whiplash” director Damien Chazelle – a “passion project” for the filmmaker, which will see Gosling play an aspiring jazz musician, while Stone will play his dreamer girlfriend, who wants to be an actress in the cut-throat world of Los Angeles.
No word on what role Legend has signed up to play, although given that it’s a musical, and he’s a musician, I’d guess that his character will likely get to sing, play an instrument or both, in the film, which is being produced by Fred Berger, Gary Gilbert, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt.
Lionsgate will release it under its Summit label, with a date set for July 15, 2016.
Legend doesn’t have many acting credits. His last role came in 2008’s “Soul Men.”
