Trailer Watch: 'Jem and the Holograms' Offers Female Friendship, Neon Faces

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: A sensational new singer is pressured by her evil record company to ditch her bandmates and become a superstar by selling out her true essence. Add some neon-pink face paint, and you’ve got the premise for the live-action version of “Jem and the Holograms,” which is clearly aimed at teenage viewers who have only seen that very familiar premise played out on screen seven or eight times before.

Still, it’s hard to fault the film’s message of “family and friendship is what really matters,” especially for younger audiences, and it’s certainly fun to watch Juliette Lewis playing the slick, suited villainess.

“Jem and the Holograms” stars Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau as the eye shadow-a-holics, as well as Molly Ringwald as singer Jem’s aunt/maternal figure.

The film comes out October 23.
