Watch: 'Downton Abbey' Season 6 Trailer Introduces the End

After three Golden Globes, 11 Primetime Emmy awards, dozens of nominations and six impressive seasons, “Downton Abbey” will end its run in 2016. Capping things off with a Christmas special, Julian Fellowes’ international hit could end up with more accolades before it’s all said and done: It’s up for Outstanding Drama Series and four other awards at this year’s Primetime Emmys and will be eligible again next year for its final season.

In the trailer above, get ready to weep. A slow, sad song plays as the servants dance and the Crawley family says their goodbyes. Of course, “Downton Abbey” is making the brave choice by wrapping up now. Rather than stretching out the story (and the ratings) for as long as possible, Fellowes is trying to preserve the series’ overall legacy. Still, when Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) takes down his name tag, I challenge any fan to keep from wishing for a few more years.

“Downton Abbey” Season 6 premieres in the U.S. January 3, 2016. (The trailer above is for the U.K. premiere in September.)
