Cosima Spender’s ‘Palio,’ the fast-paced documentary following the tale of an expert and his apprentice going head-to-head at the famous horse race in Italy, has an exhilarating new trailer.

The film follows horse racing virtuoso and legend Gigi Bruschelli, who faces off against his former protégé, the competitive Giovanni Atzeni. Set on the backdrop of a tourist and fan-crowded Siena, Italy, the documentary explores the high-stakes tradition of nearly 800 years through its real-life characters. The new trailer for “Palio” is a testament to both the gripping intensity and the highly-honed skills of the race’s contestants.

Director Cosima Spender said, “We’re proud that this film does more than just illustrate the scope of this epic event. ‘Palio’ captures the human story behind the race—the hopes, dreams, drama and corruption that make it unique, and a picture of modern Italy in microcosm. Having grown up near Siena, I could connect with the key characters to get inside access—and the drama that played out was something no screenwriter would dare imagine.”

The film premiered at Tribeca, where it won Best Editing in a Documentary. Since then, Archimedia Productions has announced that Picturehouse Entertainment will be handling the film’s U.S. distribution, with a release date set for November 6. “Palio” will also be available on iTunes in November.
