On the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” in anticipation of the upcoming school year, John Oliver discussed the discrepancies in sex education throughout the United States, highlighting some major flaws in dire need of attention. As a result of parents not wanting to talk to their kids about sex and kids not wanting to talk their parents about sex, the role of educator falls on the school system, and the sad truth is schools are failing to prepare their students. Who doesn’t remember the painfully awkward sex education classes?
Kids have a lot of important questions regarding the topic. Students ask sex-based questions, such as “will this go well for me?” Oliver points out that the answers to these questions “depend on where you live” because “there is no required standard for sex ed in this country.” The lack of a universal program is detrimental.
The segment ends with Oliver’s attempt to fix the problem, a public service announcement featuring famous folk, including Nick Offerman, Laverne Cox and Kristen Schaal, getting real on important topics like consent, safe sex and how to use a condom. Plus, Jonathan Banks of “Better Call Saul” gets to correct a decades-old wrong. Check out the video above — “Last Week Tonight” airs Sundays on HBO.
