2015 Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

2015 Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Let’s just get this out of the way: Christina Hendricks absolutely deserves an Emmy. She’s been nominated six times now, all in a row, and all for her iconic, delicately layered portrayal of Joan Harris on “Mad Men.” Jon Hamm may be getting more attention for being the winless face of the franchise, but Hendricks is just as deserving. Will she win? That’s not up to us (sadly), but we’re sure hoping she does.

Hendricks does seem like the frontrunner, but you never know with the Emmys. The winner here for the past two years — Anna Gunn — is no longer in contention for “Breaking Bad.” The winner before that — Maggie Smith — was impressively snubbed for “Downton Abbey,” despite us thinking the Emmys automatically nominated her every single year (no disrespect to the incredible Ms. Smith, but she herself doesn’t seem to care whether she’s nominated).

Two women that did make the cut from last year’s list were Christine Baranski for “The Good Wife,” who has 11 nominations without a win (though she did win for her first-ever nod back in ’95, for “Cybill”). Joanne Froggett is hot off her Golden Globes win for “Downton Abbey” and could turn her momentum into a win, as she, too, was nominated last year.

But perhaps Hendricks’ greatest threat comes from two of the hottest shows on television. “Game of Thrones” has to win something — it’s too popular not to — and Emilia Clarke plus Lena Headey make for a deadly one-two punch. One could take home a trophy at Hendricks’ expense. Netflix, though, will certainly have something to say about that. They’ll be pushing Uzo Aduba, the lone acting nominee from “Orange is the New Black,” who has won tons of awards for her work on the show, including an Emmy last year in the Guest Actress category.
