Danny Boyle Aiming To Film And Release 'Trainspotting 2' In 2016

It looks like things are getting pretty real when it comes to the long brewing "Trainspotting" sequel. Danny Boyle has been talking it up for a while now, and said last month that plans for a 2016 shoot were hoped for, but depended on working out the scheduling for the four principal cast members, many of whom have TV commitments. But it seems things are starting to gel as the director now has a timeframe for filming, and even more, hopes to have the movie in theaters next year as well.

Boyle told THR that the plan is for filming to take place in "May/June" with the aim to release the movie in 2016 as well (it would be a nice way to mark the twentieth anniversary of the first movie). The pieces are still coming together in terms of financing and what not, with Boyle confirming he’s met with Film4 to talk about the movie, but the idea is to keep the budget down to maintain his vision of the project.

“We’re doing it for less than $20 million, and that’ll give us control of the film so we can make the film we want to make,” he explained. “That’s as much as you can get without being answerable to anybody. You can sort of get on with it without much interference. Although we could have raised a lot more money for this, we didn’t so we’re trying to keep some sense like we kept the original.”

And the filmmaker is also keenly aware of the legacy he has to live up to, and promises the follow-up will be a worthy successor. “The actors were understandably worried about its reputation and not wanting to let people down or to just be cashing in. So actually, the script, which John [Hodge] has written, has been put under a very fierce spotlight by everyone, and it’s a good one,” Boyle stated.

Overall, it looks like all the pieces are falling into place, with the main quartet — Ewan McGregor, Robert CarlyleJonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner — if not officially inked just yet, preparing to return. Has Underworld been given a call yet? Get on it Boyle.
