Latvia Selects Gambling Tale 'Modris' as Oscar Entry

The Latvian National Film Center announced that an expert commission selected “Modris” by Juris Kursietis as the country’s official Oscar submission to vie for a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Modris” tells the story of a teenage boy who, besides dealing with the regular perils of adolescence, faces a destructive gambling addiction. His behavior causes tension at home with his mother, who has given up on him, and eventually will force him to evaluate his choices and their consequences.

This is Kursietis’ debut feature and screened at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, San Sebastian International Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival. “Modris” also won the Best Debut Film at the Latvian National Film Festival.

International sales are being handled by Pluto Film. U.S. rights are still available.

The Baltic nation has yet to be nominated for an Academy Award. This is Latvia’s seventh overall submission.
