That’s right, you read that correctly; although it really shouldn’t be a surprise. I predict it’ll be one of Marvel’s best-selling comic books ever, whenever it’s eventually published.
The revered writer, journalist, and educator is also a big comic book fan – something that those of us who follow him on Twitter will know very well, and maybe something that Marvel also noticed (he interviewed Marvel editor Sana Amanat about comic book universe diversity earlier this year), which led to the publisher requesting the contributions of his mighty mind in the form of a Black Panther comic.
“It was a fruitful discussion,” Coates recalls. Clearly it was.
To be titled “A Nation Under Our Feet,” with a story by Coates and drawn by Brian Stelfreeze, will find Black Panther “dealing with a violent uprising in his country set off by a superhuman terrorist group called the People.”
Axel Alonso, the editor in chief of Marvel, says: “It’s going to be a story that repositions the Black Panther in the minds of readers… It really moves him forward.”
Coates’ Black Panther series reign will begin next spring.
I have to let this simmer for a little bit to consider the possibilities here before saying anymore. But this, by all accounts, will be big. And how it might (or might not) influence the upcoming Black Panther movie is interesting to consider. One could say that it’s all wonderfully-timed to help continue to build anticipation for that film’s release in 2018.
More to come…
