Oscilloscope Acquires Penélope Cruz TIFF Drama 'Ma Ma'

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that it has
acquired U.S. rights to “Ma Ma,” directed by Julio Medem and starring
Penélope Cruz. The Spanish film concerns a woman who, after having been
recently diagnosed with cancer, forms an unlikely bond with a soccer scout
whose wife suffered a grave car accident.

The official press release reads: “‘Ma Ma’ is a sublime
and heartfelt melodrama about life, death, romance, and motherhood. Cruz stars
as Magda, a woman whose strength, grace, and unending capacity for love guide
her through both tragedies and miracles alike. A chance encounter following a
grim medical diagnosis connects her with Arturo (Luis Tosar), who is, himself,
dealing with unspeakable loss. Together, they raise Magda’s son while grappling
with the realities of their situations and ultimately rising above life’s
trials to find joy.”

“‘Ma Ma’ is a deeply resonant film that is clearly the work of an auteur with a distinct and important voice,” O-Scope’s Dan Berger said. “Julio’s vision, and Penélope’s incredible performance leap from the screen and we couldn’t be more excited to bring them to audiences.”

The film will have its world premiere on September 15 at
this year’s Toronto Independent Film Festival. No release dates have been
set.
