The 2015 Outfest Legacy Awards will go to Lisa Cholodenko and Tom Hanks, it was announced today. Each will be honored on November 5th in Los Angeles, following in the footsteps of previous winners Hilary Swank, Lee Daniels, Roland Emmerich and Armistead Maupin. Hanks will take home the Legacy Award, while Cholodenko will be given the Visionary Award.
“More than two decades later, Tom Hanks‘ performance as a gay man with AIDS in ‘Philadelphia’ stands as a landmark example of a risk well taken,” Outfest Board Co-President Ari Karpel said in a statement. “His Oscar acceptance speech, in which he eloquently honored two gay men who were influential in his life, sent an essential message during a time of crisis.”
Christopher Racster, Interim Executive Director of Outfest, meanwhile, praised Cholodenko specifically for her work on the 2010 film “The Kids Are All Right.”
“That has made the biggest impact, showing the world that LGBT parenting is just as joyful, complicated and challenging as straight parenting,” he said.
The ceremony will take place at Downtown LA arts venue Vibiana, with Merrill Lynch and Louis Vuitton serve as sponsors.
