The specific start date for Oscar season is debatable. Some people believe it kicks off early in the year with the Cannes Film Festival; others focus on the sneak peek at fall titles in the Telluride lineup. But nobody can argue that the Toronto International Film Festival looms large in this equation: It’s here that massive public audiences and the industry collide as awards campaigns gain serious momentum.
But that’s not the only reason to talk about the Toronto lineup. For this special edition of Indiewire’s weekly podcast Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson sat down before a live audience at the festival to discuss many of the highlights in this year’s lineup and the hints of things to come. Special thanks to Toronto documentary programmer Thom Powers for introducing this week’s conversation.
