With the Toronto International Film Festival behind us, Oscar season is in full swing, even as the New York Film Festival aims to shake things up even more. Right now, the stage is set for a battle between some of the usual players this time of the year — The Weinstein Company, Sony Pictures Classics — as well as some relative newcomers to the race, like Open Road and A24, and big studios like Universal and Fox. Is “Spotlight” still the frontrunner — or are “The Martian,” “Steve Jobs” and “Room” gaining momentum?
In this week’s episode of Screen Talk, Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson discuss that question and others pertaining to the race as it stands. They also riff on this week’s new releases.
