Trailer Watch: Sarah Silverman Drives into the Abyss in Alcoholism Drama 'I Smile Back'

As a mother of two who can’t get through the day without a drink and the occasional hit of cocaine, Sarah Silverman dives into her darkest role yet in the psychological drama “I Smile Back.”

Adapted by Amy Koppelman from her own novel with Paige Dylan, the film has debuted its first trailer, which captures both the devotion that Lainey (Silverman) has for her young children and the despairing craving to feel or experience something beyond her family. But “I Smile Back” isn’t simply about Betty Friedan’s problem with no name, but Lainey’s tragic inability to take care of herself — even as she’s forced to take care of others.

“I Smile Back” opens October 23.
