“We call it the constitution, and that’s what makes us America,” Tom Hanks says over a lofty score by Thomas Newman in the new trailer for “Bridge Of Spies.” Reteaming with his old pal Steven Spielberg, the movie is a Cold War tale about an ordinary man who is sent into the heart of darkness to do an extraordinary thing, but it looks like good ol’ fashioned American Values will light the way.
“I think the character that Tom Hanks plays, James B. Donovan, he was what you would call the Standing Man,” Spielberg told EW. “The stand-up kind of guy who stands up for what he believes in to be a universal truth, which is basically justice for all – regardless of what side of the Iron Curtain you are on. He was only interested in the letter of the law.”
The story follows an insurance lawyer who serves his country by negotiating the release of an American caught between enemy lines. The Coen Brothers are co-writers on the script, but as we learned with “Unbroken,” that isn’t always a marker of quality. That said, Spielberg can never be counted out of the Oscar race and it’ll be interesting to see how it plays in the awards season.
“Bridge Of Spies” opens on October 16th. Watch two new trailers below.
