“I think we can all agree the only thing more fun than watching two exes fight about their relationship is to watch two beloved children’s characters do the same thing.”
Though I hope against hope this thought never passed through the mind of anyone in the “Muppets” marketing department, the amount of content centered on Kermit and Piggy’s break-up in the new show’s PR campaign has me questioning the judgement of all involved. First picked up as a silly piece of news a few months back, the debate intensified as nostalgic adult fans of the Muppets felt genuine concern for two of their favorite characters from childhood. From there, ads and “interviews” all seemed to focus on the break-up, with the general premise of ABC’s sitcom taking a backseat. The buzz around the couple has turned them into — as Ms. Piggy puts it in the above video — “the Donald Trump of love,” though that’s not the complement she believes it to be.
The love triangle of Ms. Piggy, Kermit and newcomer Denise — words I truly never thought I’d have to write — has also lead to some truly awkward moments, (hopefully) climaxing in the above exchange on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” In an interview to promote the show, Kimmel seems forced early on to bring up the break-up, but (once the topic quickly spins out of control) he tries steering the ship back to calmer waters — to no avail. The former couple’s back-and-forth isn’t executed in a comical fashion: It’s a little bit sad, a little bit confusing and very, very awkward.
Take a look for yourself. “The Muppets” premieres tonight at 8pm on ABC.
