Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” has been quickly gaining attention for its A-list cast and crew, its epic scale and the uniqueness of its source material, and the hype has only been boosted by positive reviews from its premiere at TIFF last week. Holding audiences over until its theatrical release early in October is another clip from 20th Century Fox.
The clip shows Damon’s character, Mark Watney, breaking down the numbers to figure out how much food he needs to survive until the rescue mission arrives. For someone strategizing his own survival, Watney is surprisingly nonchalant and cheery, chewing on snacks and joking around that “Mars will come to fear my botany powers.” The clip demonstrates that some of the more memorable elements of the source material (Andy Weir’s self published 2011 novel), specifically Watney’s cocky and jovial attitude and the “hard science,” will carry over into the film. Weir’s meticulous commitment to real-life physics and figures is what brought the novel so much attention as a great example of “hard science fiction.”
“The Martian” will be released theatrically on October 2.
