Common Inks 2-Year First-Look Deal with HBO

A day after the rapper-turned-actor joined the cast of the sequel to “John Wick” to play the movie’s main villain, Common has now inked a two-year first-look TV deal with premium cabler HBO, which will see him develop and produce projects for the network through his Freedom Road Productions shingle.

Certainly premium cable is likely the most ideal home for any content creator wanting a certain kind of creative freedom, and I’m curious to see what Common has in mind. He’s already serving behind the camera as a producer on Lena Waithe’s Chicago-set Showtime drama project, which just got a pilot order at the network.

Beyond that, he’s busy, and will next be seen on the big screen in the ensemble cast “Suicide Squad,” as well as “Barbershop 3” and, on the small screen in “The Wiz Live!,” a live television production of the 1975 musical “The Wiz.”
